BJP President Shah Amit Shah arrives in Maharashtra; to meet Uddhav Thackeray

Amit Shah is scheduled to meet Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray at the latter's home on Sunday. Uddhav will have to back Kovind for the presidential polls as the Sena is NDA's ally and shares power with the BJP in the state and at the Centre, said observers.

Transport Minister Diwakar Raote, while speaking to reporters here, said that Sena will raise the issue of fragile economic condition of the DCC banks after the notes recall exercise in November a year ago with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during the cabinet meeting next week. "It was for this reason that we had proposed the name of RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat as the president of India", Thackeray said.

Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Shah recently said the BJP was ready for mid-term polls in Maharashtra.

On Friday, the first meeting between the government and the opposition on presidential elections remained inconclusive as no names were discussed by either side. "It was a very positive meeting and sent a signal that the Sena is very much part of the NDA despite its frequent outbursts", a BJP functionary said.

It said that BJP was it is backing (J&K chief minister) Mehbooba Mufti, who in turn, keeps making reckless statements.

Sena has never indulged in the politics of hiding behind someone.

The BJP leaders also had meetings with AIADMK leader M Thambidurai and CPI leader S Sudhakar Reddy, Samajwadi party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav and BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra. He was referring to the constant talk by Shiv Sena to withdraw support, which has not come true till now. "The burden of loan waiver will be on the government and not banks", he had said. "We shall decide on whether or not to support the candidature of Kovind tomorrow", Thackeray said.

A day before title-holders India face Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final at London's Oval ground, the BJP chief Amit Shah today said India can not stop playing Pakistan in global tournaments, but made it clear that the two countries will not play each other on Indian or Pakistani soil.

The BJP unit in Maharashtra is prepared for mid-term polls, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said here on Thursday. "Now if you don't want to give (a suggestion), then we will go to them after taking a decision", the BJP president told reporters in Mumbai on Saturday.

According to sources, the party may consider the idea of jumping into a mid-term poll coinciding with the crucial assembly elections due in neighbouring Gujarat by the year-end.

The board members will be briefed about the consultation undertaken by a three-member party committee with allies and opposition parties.
