Congressman faces third surgery today after ballpark shooting

"I have just been informed that the alleged shooter at the Republican baseball practice this morning is someone who apparently volunteered on my presidential campaign", Sanders said.

Majority Whip Steve Scalise is facing a third surgery today, one day after police say IL gunman James Hodgkinson opened fire during a Republican baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise was still in critical condition Friday night and faces several additional surgeries, but doctors said they were "encouraged" by his progress.

Also suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.

President Trump, speaking from the White House, called for national unity after the "very, very brutal assault".

Investigators now confirm the gunman who shot at Congressman Steve Scalise and three others, including Congressional staff and Capitol Police Officers, was carrying a list of names, which included congressmen. Hodgkinson sprayed rifle fire at Republican congressmen on Wednesday as they practiced for a charity baseball game.

The Daily Caller first reported that James T. Hodgkinson had a list of Republican names in his pocket that was recovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The FBI is still investigating the case and is looking through Hodgkinson's belongings, including his cellphone, computer and camera.

The news that the shooter had a list of names suggests the shooting was not a random outburst, but instead appears to be a premeditated political assassination. "I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm". The person did not disclose the names, but said those listed had been briefed. The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Suzanne Hodgkinson trembled and held a deputy's arm as she spoke to reporters in the southern IL town. "I can't wrap my head around it", Hodgkinson said. Police killed the gunman in a shootout.

In his first public comments since the shooting, Dr. Jack Sava of MedStar Washington Hospital Center said it's a "good possibility" that Scalise will be able to return to work in his full capacity.

He remained in critical condition on Thursday, CBS News reported.
