Russian diplomat condemns U.S. for downing Syrian fighter jet

Dunford said American troops "made every effort" to warn the pro-Bashar al-Assad aircraft not to come any closer to the local Syrian Democratic Force. The bombings wounded "a number of SDF fighters and driving the SDF from the town".

Russia, Syria's main ally, also said it is suspending a cooperative pact with the U.S. aimed at maintaining airspace safety in Syria, BBC reported.

Syria's army disputed the account, saying its plane was hit while "conducting a mission against the terrorist Islamic State group".

"We view these actions by the American command as a conscious failure to uphold their responsibilities within the memorandum", the ministry said.

The Russian defense ministry says in a statement that, starting Monday, it will track all jets and drones of the USA -led coalition west of the Euphrates and treat them as targets.

We will diplomatically and militarily work in next hours so as to restore mechanisms and bring conflict down, the USA high-ranking official stated.

The Russian Defense Ministry called the attack an act of "military aggression" and pledged to halt cooperation with US forces in response.

The U.S. military says it shot down a Syrian air force jet that dropped bombs near U.S. -backed forces in the fight against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria.

Russian Defense Ministry said the shooting down of a jet in Syria's airspace was a "violation" of the country's sovereignty and global law.

Russian Federation has been providing air cover for Syrian president Bashar Assad since 2015 while the coalition has been bombing Islamic State (IS) targets since 2014, sometimes alongside regime forces.

"The Russian Federation has indicated that their goal in Syria, like ours, is to defeat ISIS and we'll see if that's true here in the coming hours", said Gen. Joseph Dunford, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"What was it, if not an act of aggression?"

The two countries support opposing sides in Syria's civil war.

Government forces have also been attacking IS in northern, central and southern Syria, seizing 25,000 square kilometers (9,600 square miles) and reaching the Iraqi border for the first time in years.

A U.S. Super Hornet immediately responded and shot down the Syrian plane.

SDF spokesman Talal Sillo said the government aims to thwart the SDF offensive to capture the city of Raqqa. The Defence Ministry stated that it will now "track and target" any airborne vehicle that enters its areas of operations in Syria.
