Scalise condition upgraded to serious

The Congressional Baseball Game for Charity sold more than 20,000 tickets and raised more than $1 million for charity.

Interest in the charity baseball game has skyrocketed in the aftermath of the shooting, as staffers and lawmakers look to rally around Scalise and the three others who were shot: a congressional staffer, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police special agent.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise was wounded along with four others.

Police secure the site of a morning shooting at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park June 14, 2017 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Scalise's surgeon said on Friday he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", even though when he arrived at the hospital he was at imminent risk of death. He requires assistance to breathe and will need additional surgeries, his family said through a statement. "ONE FAMILY", proclaimed a sign in the crowd.

Sava said Friday that there are hundreds of bullet fragments in Scalise's body, but 'we have no intention to try and remove all the bullet fragments at this point'.

"The major initial risk to life is because of the hemorrhage", which doctors now have under control, Sava said.

Mr Scalise was fielding ground balls at second base on Wednesday (local time) when he was shot at a practice for an annual Republicans-Democrats baseball game.

"The members of Congress, the staff and the volunteers who were out at practice this morning care deeply about the causes they play to benefit", game organizers said in a statement released Wednesday.

Scalise was shot in the hip, with the bullet tearing through his pelvis and injuring internal organs.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding, Sava said.

"We are encouraged by improvement of his condition over the last 36 hours", Sava said.

Scalise was an enthusiastic participant in the ballgame - in 2015 he posted pictures from the many times he played in the competition against the Democrats' team.

The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Scalise remained in critical condition on Thursday after the latest surgery.

In a final flourish of bipartisan camaraderie, Democrat Mike Doyle, his team's manager, accepted the trophy, then gave it to his Republican counterpart Joe Barton to put in Mr Scalise's office on behalf of the Democrats.

The doctor said Scalise has been sedated although the dosage has been turned down to allow him to respond to family members.

"By playing tonight you will show the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy", he said.
