"The Scalise family greatly appreciates the outpouring of thoughts and prayers", the hospital wrote, "on behalf of the Scalise family".

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

The person says investigators aren't sure of the significance of the names and it's not clear whether this was a list of people the attacker was targeting. He arrived "in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", Sava said, adding that now, "we are encouraged by improvement in his condition".

The bullet struck Scalise in the hip, and traveled across his body, shattering bones and passing through internal organs, causing major internal bleeding.

Suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth. The 51-year-old remains in a critical condition. He said doctors have turned down Scalise's sedation levels enough that he has been able to respond to visiting family members.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he is being treated, said in a statement that Scalise underwent a second surgery "related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg" from previous day.

On Thursday night Scalise was honored at the annual congressional baseball game at Nationals Stadium, where a record crowd showed up. More than $1 million has been raised for Congressional Sports for Charity so far, the game's organizers announced.

She says she's grateful to President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and all of Scalise's Capitol Hill colleagues "who have reached out to us during this most challenging time".
