Senior Ukrainian intelligence officer killed in car bombing

Authorities say a bomb planted under or inside a auto has killed a senior Ukrainian military intelligence officer in the country's capital.

Police say that the driver of a luxury auto has been killed instantly as the vehicle blew up at a Kiev intersection.

The blast is the latest deadly incident to rock the city, as crisis-hit Ukraine battles a bloody Russian-backed insurgency in its eastern regions.

The explosion happened as the Mercedes was moving at around 08:00 local time (05:00 GMT), police said.

The defence ministry described the blast as a "terrorist act".

"As a result of (the explosion) a member of the defense ministry's main intelligence department, Colonel Maksim Shapoval, was killed", the defence ministry said in a statement.

Last March, Russian opposition politician Denis Voronenkovwas shot dead outside a hotel in central Kyiv.

In July a year ago, prominent investigate journalist Pavel Sheremet was killed in central Kyiv while driving to front a radio talk show.

Fighting in Ukraine's east has killed more than 10,000 people, according to the United Nations.
