"If selected, United State offer to sell F-16 and F/A-18 fighter aircraft to India would represent the most significant defence cooperation between the U.S. and India to date", the White House said. "The sharp decline in how much global publics trust the USA president on the world stage is especially pronounced among some of America's closest allies in Europe and Asia, as well as neighboring Mexico and Canada".

It was the first ever meeting between the leaders of the two largest democracies of the world and the camaraderie between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump was on full display as the two leaders heaped praise on each other at the White House. The journalists were told ahead of time that there would be no questions allowed - a break from the typical Rose Garden tradition of two questions from each press delegation.

Monday's talks were preceded by a one-on-one meeting between Modi and Trump in the Oval Office.

During his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Trump shook hands with him for close to 90 seconds and the video of an awkward expression on Abe's face after the hand shake had gone viral. "I would like to invite you to India, along with your family. We hope we'll be catching you very soon in terms of percentage increase - I have to tell you, we're working on it!"

"This is a visit of great significance which will lead to closer ties with a valued friend", Modi tweeted. "He may have been trying to maintain the bromance that he had with Obama". Mr Modi described the two countries as mutually reinforcing engines of growth and innovation in an uncertain global economic landscape.

Trump said he wanted to "thank the Indian people" for their contribution to helping development in Afghanistan. "But he has gone out of his way to reach out to India".

Stating that ties formed the core of the bilateral relations, he said that the Netherlands was India's sixth largest trading partner in the European Union and the fifth largest investment partner globally. He said the US and India will enhance intelligence-sharing.

"To all appearances, the chemistry seems to have been quite good between Trump and Modi", said Rana Banerji, a retired intelligence officer in New Delhi.

In one realm at least, it should be an easy lift.

And in a move suggesting a tougher stance by the Trump administration against Pakistan-based militants, the State Department imposed sanctions on June 26 on Syed Salahuddin, leader of the main rebel group that fights against Indian control in the divided Himalayan region of Kashmir.

The two leaders voiced a joint interest in bringing stability to Afghanistan, where India has committed $3 billion in aid since 2001.

Climate change could be a contentious issue, according to AP.

"India and USA are working together to bring stability and peace in Afghanistan", he said.

It was only on the second day of Modi's trip that he swooped in for his bear hugs.

It's the first dinner Trump and first lady Melania Trump have hosted for a foreign dignitary at the White House.

President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday called on Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch attacks on other countries, the White House said in a statement. The president has business partners in India, where he has more than a dozen active deals, including a Trump-branded luxury apartment complex being built in the western city of Pune, near Mumbai.

Yet another hug was to come between the two, this time at the White House portico, as Modi departed for his hotel. By then Trump appeared to be ready, and welcomed the parting gesture by patting Modi kindly on the back.
