Days of deliberations but still no verdict at Cosby sex assault trial

Days of deliberations but still no verdict at Cosby sex assault trial

Just a quick recap: Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting several women, notably Andrea Constand at his Philadelphia home in 2004.

His attorney indicated he would like to motion for a mistrial, but the judge told him "not at this time".

It remains the sole discretion of the judge in charge of the trial to send back the jury as many times as required to continue deliberations and to decide when to declare a hung jury and mistrial. However, this month's trial marked the first time Cosby faced criminal charges; the statute of limitations had expired in virtually all of the other cases.

He also has claimed that their physical contact was consensual.

"If after further deliberations, you are still deadlocked on some or all the charges, you should report that to me".

"I may have been unclear in where we are right now", O'Neill said.

The strongest pieces of evidence against Cosby in the case here were his admissions in police interviews and a decade-old deposition that he'd given Benadryl, which he used as a sleep aid, to Constand before their sexual encounter.

Cosby allegedly drugged and raped Bernard before her guest star appearance on "The Cosby Show" in 1992, Bernard told The Temple News.

Each of the three counts of aggravated indecent assault against Cosby carries a maximum 10-year prison term, though the counts could be merged at sentencing if he is convicted.

The jury told a judge on their fourth day of deliberations Thursday that it's deadlocked.

As reporters streamed out of the courtroom, poet and author Jewel Allison - one of the dozens of women who have accused Cosby of assaulting them - burst into tears.

Nearby, a group three women also held up pieces of paper that said "Free Mr. Cosby Now".

Constand's lawyer, Dolores Troiani, said only that the "jury is apparently working very hard".

Cosby's publicist, Andrew Wyatt, said the jury's indecision was a win for the entertainer.

Reports of scenes outside the court have noted the polarizing effect of the Cosby trial on Americans. He says Cosby was cute and clever with the children and talked to them in Italian.

"Hey!" to Cosby as he enters the courthouse every morning, to the woman shouting "We've already won!" while driving a U-Haul truck with an anti-sexual assault message, there's plenty for the myriad of news organizations covering the trial to see.

On Wednesday, Cosby chanted the popular "Fat Albert" catchphrase to supporters after the jury's negotiations wrapped up for the day.

Cosby could face ten years in prison for each count if convicted. According to an affidavit, Constand has accused Cosby of drugging her with three blue pills and then making physical contact without her consent including forcing his hands into her pants and coercing her into touching his erect penis in 2004. Constand said on the witness stand she did not know Jackson. Some of them looked defeated as the judge sent them back to the jury room.
