Mohammed Bin Salman has also spearheaded the groundbreaking reforms Saudi Arabia has witnessed recently.

A son of the late Crown Prince Nayef who had served as interior minister since 1975 until his death from a heart attack in 2012, Prince Mohammed had been closely identified with the formidable and effective security structure built by his father.

State media in the gas-rich Gulf state said Emir Sheikh Tamim Hamad Al-Thani had sent a cable of congratulations to the Saudi leadership. These include his ambitious development project "Vision 2030" and plans to sell off part of the state-run oil giant Aramco. He has since amassed vast powers, serving as defense minister, overseeing the state oil monopoly and working to overhaul the Saudi economy in the face of a dramatic drop in oil prices. The rebels have led to death of thousands of innocent civilians since its emergency in 2015.

After the decrees were announced, Saudi TV aired footage of the new crown prince warmly greeting the man he is replacing, Mohammed bin Nayef.

Al Arabiya television reported that the promotion of the prince was approved by the kingdom's Allegiance Council, and that the king had called for a public pledging of loyalty to Mohammed bin Salman on Wednesday evening in Mecca.

It was Washington's strongest language yet on a dispute that erupted after the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt cut diplomatic ties and transport links to isolate Qatar.

"I also pay tribute to the work of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, who has played a central role in our counter-terrorism collaboration and been a firm friend of the United Kingdom for many years". Prince Abdulaziz bin Saud, 33, was named the new interior minister tasked with counterterrorism efforts and domestic security. The crown prince is the eldest son from the king's third and most recent wife.

Then-crown prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz was the most important person in the kingdom for years after his brother King Fahd had a stroke in 1995, although Abdullah did not become king until a decade later.

What is more, the change ends uncertainty over succession.

Saudi Arabia is on the eve of changes, the young prince Mohamed bin Salman appointed crown prince.

In 2017, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef was also awarded for his contributions to "counter-terrorism" efforts by Michael Pompeo, the new director of the Central Intelligence Agency. "Donald Trump visited Riyadh on his first overseas trip as president and has since visibly tilted in Saudi Arabia's direction in policy toward the rest of the region, most notably in his animosity toward Iran".
