Trump gloats as three CNN journalists quit over retracted story

One problem: When challenged on the particulars of the story, CNN acknowledged that it couldn't stand by it.

Following the retraction, Scaramucci tweeted that CNN "did the right thing".

Journalist Thomas Frank, who was the author of the story in question, was joined by investigative reporters Eric Lictblau and Lex Harris in handing in their resignations.

"Wow, CNN had to retract big story on "Russia", with 3 employees forced to resign".

Colbert did concede that CNN does have some phony stories. On the conservative channel Fox News, reliably pro-Trump pundits Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity jumped on the story.

Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., tweeted a link to the Bonifield video. CNN also issued an apology to the subject of the story, Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci. The highly charged environment has led CNN Chairman Jeff Zucker to stress internally the need to "play error-free ball" in reporting on Trump.

In the second quarter, CNN's ratings were up 10% in prime time (8 11 p.m.) to a Nielsen 1.1 million total viewers versus a year ago. CNN later retracted the story. CNN's White House correspondent, Jim Acosta, has been particularly vocal in protesting the administration's dwindling number of on-camera news briefings.

The White House said Tuesday that it disagrees with all stories that claim President Donald Trump colluded with Russian Federation "in any capacity". And it subsequently cancelled a new series, "Believer", and fired host Reza Aslan after he described Trump in vulgar terms on Twitter.

Frank, an on-air reporter for "CNN Investigates" who wrote the story, and Lichtblau are veteran print reporters who joined CNN amid the expansion of the cable news powerhouse's digital news operations.

"I think you could take it pretty straightforward that this administration disagrees with all of the stories that claim that the President and his campaign colluded with Russian Federation in any capacity", she said.

He also had an opinion on CNN chief executive Jeff Zucker. "CNN says that the retraction does not mean the facts of the story were necessarily wrong, but they pulled the story because standard editorial processes were not followed", Colbert said. However, news organisations typically submit important stories to multiple layers of editing, which doesn't appear to be the case here. "And I think if that is the place that certain outlets are going, particularly for the goal of spiking ratings, and if that's coming directly from the top, I think that's even more scary and certainly more disgraceful.".

Haris nevertheless took responsibility for it in a statement. The retracted CNN story was heavily dependent upon one anonymous source.

Haris was the previous executive editor of CNN Money before being appointed to head the investigations team in January. Bonifield later goes on to say that the president is justified in saying "Look, you are witch hunting me".

CNN anchor Michael Smerconish is not embarrassed by his network's shoddy Russian Federation reporting last week, because they took immediate steps to correct it.

Of course, that CNN produces fake news isn't news to us.
