Drugs Case: Akun Sabharwal Cancels His Leave

The notices issued by the Enforcement wing of the Excise and Prohibition department to 15 personalities, including heroes, heroines, producers, directors and some character actors, have created commotion in the industry that produces the second largest number of films after Bollywood every year. Admitting that a couple of Ministers had made somewhat adverse comments on them, the P&E officials were exuberant over the directions from the Chief Minister.

"In view of the importance of the drugs case, I'm postponing my leave till completion of the enquiry", he said.

Regarding his plan to go on leave, Mr. Sabharwal clarified that he had planned the leave much in advance and it had nothing to do with the drug cases.

Akun had actually applied for the leave late last month to perform rituals pending after his mother's demise two months ago.

On Friday, Sabharwal had said he was going on leave for "personal reasons" after confirming reports that 12 persons in the Telugu film industry had been issued a notice to come in for questioning as part of the investigation. "There is no link between my leave and the case", he had said. The SIT, comprising five inspectors, has been directed to record the statements of all the persons mentioned in the data gathered from the drug racket accused.

Among those arrested since the racket was busted on July 2, were a U.S. citizen, Dundu Anish, an aerospace engineer who had earlier worked with the NASA, and seven B Tech graduates, most of whom were working for multi-national companies. He denied any pressure from government to go slow on this case.

The issue of drug abuse in Hyderabad and the south was highlighted when investigations proved that students in the area used LSD and over 1,000 students were said to be affected by this issue.

Actress Jeevitha supporting Tollywood industry faulted government and police officials for defaming the industry and isolating only celebrities when many bigwigs of the society are also victims or users of the drugs.

"I have the full support of the government".
