Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for Edmonton and area

Line of thunderstorms roll in off Lake Huron on June 17, 2017.

It could be a wet and windy morning in London and the surrounding area Thursday. A warning remains in effect for Oxford County.

A large tree branch was ripped down by high winds on Chestnut Street in Salem when a thunderstorm moved through the area late Friday afternoon.

"Heavy rain, wind gusts to 90 kilometres per hour, and hail up to 2 cm in diameter are likely with storms that are moving eastward", Environment Canada said in its original warning.

People headed to the beaches to cool off will find potentially risky rip currents and breaking waves due to the remnants of Tropical Storm Eugene. Accompanied with the chances for thunderstorms are heat index values predicted to reach into the low to mid 100s, according to the weather service.

Johnson said the primary threats from these storm cells are strong straight-line winds and heavy downpours that can cause flash flooding.
