Zlatan Ibrahimovic wants to stay at Manchester United, but must prove fitness

Despite being United's top goalscorer in 2016-17, Ibrahimovic was released by the Premier League giants after suffering a serious knee injury in April.

Mourinho has said it is "possible" Ibrahimovic will be offered a new deal, and fans have reacted to the news on social media.

"It's possible, it's open", Mourinho said.

The latest development might also explain why United's new signing Romelu Lukaku felt the need to ask Ibrahimovic's permission to wear the number nine shirt at Old Trafford - a shirt the former Paris Saint-Germain striker had worn last season.

The attacker was the star player in Mourinho's debut season at United, scoring 28 goals across all competitions, which included the victor in the Community Shield and a brace in the 3-2 win over Southampton in the EFL Cup final. Old Trafford, Carrington is open for him to recover and be one of us and, at the same time, let's make a decision that will make us all happy.

"Yes, we have had interest, that is obvious and it's public", Mourinho said.

Ibrahimovic has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer, Mourinho said the forward had indicated he wanted to continue to play at "the highest level". [He] didn't want to hide behind such an incredible injury. Of course with his first European trophy but not playing and he made the challenge for himself of wanting to keep playing at the highest level.

"So we're speaking, we are changing ideas and again it's in the hands of (executive vice-chairman Ed) Woodward and Zlatan's agent, but the important thing is that the final decision is the best for the player".

"Let's make a decision that makes us all happy and if that's for him to stay and we wait until December, maybe".

Galaxy coach Curt Onalfo told the Press Association the club is always looking to bring in great players but declined to specifically address the Ibrahimovic rumors.
