Egypt attacker first spoke to German victims

The ministry said it strongly recommends its citizens to review plans before visiting Egypt, and if possible abstain from doing so, citing Friday's attack on tourists and the extension of the state of emergency across the country as reasons.

Russian Federation swiftly suspended all flights to and from Egypt.

The tourists who died were Ukrainian, the interior ministry said.

Security sources said surveillance cameras showed the attackers also seizing the policemen's weapons.

The attacker is believed to be a student from northern Egypt.

This seaside resort on the Red sea is very popular with european tourists.

An Egyptian security official speaking to The Associated Press said the suspect swam up to the hotel where the attacks occurred from another beach.

Iraq declared victory in Mosul this week after a almost nine-month battle that ravaged the city and took a heavy toll on residents and security forces.

The German Foreign Ministry issued a statement Saturday saying the country is "dismayed and furious" by the stabbing of the two female tourists and that the assailant deliberately targeted foreign nationals.

The assailants opened fire on a police vehicle before fleeing, according to the ministry of the Interior. He said police arrived to the crime scene in "just a few minutes".

Judicial sources told AFP that the man being detained had confessed to sharing the ideology Daesh, although there was no Daesh claim of responsibility.

Elsewhere on Friday, gunmen ambushed a checkpoint in Giza province south of Cairo, shooting and killing five policemen and setting their auto on fire.

The army later claimed it killed 40 militants in raids. At least 102 Egyptian Christians have been killed in four separate attacks since December 2016. However, a shadowy group called Hasm, or "Decisiveness", which the government suspects is linked to the now-banned Muslim Brotherhood, has claimed responsibility for similar drive-by shootings and attacks targeting police, military, judges and pro-government figures.
