At least seven dead after flooding in Arizona

At least eight people were killed and two were still missing on Sunday (July 16) after flash flooding interrupted a family gathering in central Arizona over the weekend.

According to reports, Sgt. David Hornung from the Gila County Sheriff's Department stated that a family composed of 14 members who were spending time near the Cold Springs Swimming Hole were affected by a flash flood Saturday afternoon.

Fourteen people were caught in the flash flood that struck at the Cold Springs Swimming Hole shortly before 3:19 p.m. Saturday local time (6:19 p.m. EDT), sheriff's officials said.

Five bodies were reportedly recovered Sunday, after four were recovered Saturday. The rescued family members were rushed to a nearby hospital to be treated from hypothermia.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for Southern Arizona that's in effect until Monday evening.

Mr Sattelmaier said: They had no warning - they heard a roar and it was on top of them. The terrain in the area is supportive for enhanced runoff of rain water and limited notice of flash flooding coming from upstream. "We don't believe there's anybody left out there", Water Wheel Fire and Medical District Fire Chief Ron Sattelmaier said.

"There's no way of knowing how many people were actually there", Sattelmaier said. "Unfortunately the heavy rain hit a fire scar and the water had no place to go but run off into the hole". It happened during monsoon season, when whether like this can strike furiously. "It was a big group of people out there enjoying swimming in the river and playing in the water", he said.

Crowds looking to beat the Phoenix metro area's heat often head to the small creeks that flow out of the mountains forming swimming holes and a series of small waterfalls. Four of the campers who were swept away were found alive.

Terrible news is coming out of central Arizona, as it's being reported that several people have died from severe flash flooding. "It's later that we have our moments", he said. A flood over Labor Day 1970 killed 23 people near the state's Mogollon Rim.
