Doctors find 27 contact lenses in woman's eye

An Indian-origin eye specialist in the United Kingdom has found 27 contact lenses stuck in the eye of a 67-year-old woman who was due to have a cataract surgery.

Details of the case, which occurred in November previous year at Solihull Hospital, West Midlands, were recently outlined in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

According to the medical reports, the eye specialists at the hospital initially discovered 17 lenses "bound together by mucus", before a further diagnoses showed that another 10 lenses were lodged in her eye.

The patient's surgery was immediately postponed after the discovery - the prolonged time for which the contact lenses were in her eyes would have increased the risk of endophthalmitis.

A surgical team was able to remove all 27 lenses.

The patient allegedly did not know that she was wearing that many lenses, despite using disposable lenses for the last 35 years.

What was it? Oh, only 17 old contact lenses stuck together. Morjaria added that this was quite the shock to the operating team, which had one doctor with over two decades of experience in the field.

This is quite understandable, and the best reminder we've ever heard to take out your lenses and give your eyes room to breathe. Ten more were found by the surgeon with the help of a microscope.

Surprisingly, the patient had not reported any symptoms of the missing contact lenses.

She told Optometry Today, "It was such a large mass". Part of their surprise, she said, was because the patient hadn't complained of any irritation. Amazing. Please take out your contact lenses. She claimed that she was unaware that the lenses were missing. She also admitted to not attending regular optometrist appointments.

"In this day and age, when it is so easy to purchase contact lenses online, people become lax about having regular check ups", Morjaria said.

However, the senior citizen brushed it off as she thought it was due to her dry eyes, and her old age.
