Madhur Bhandarkar cancels press conference of 'Indu Sarkar' fearing Congress!

The Congress workers on Saturday created ruckus at a hotel in Pune where press conference of Madhur Bhandarkar's movie "Indu Sarkar" was scheduled.

Indu Sarkar is based on a 21-month long period, from 1975 to 1977, when the then prime minister Indira Gandhi unilaterally had a state of emergency declared across the country.

Hours after Bhandarkar's jibe against Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leadership struck back, accusing him of resorting to cheap tactics for publicity. The irked director tweeted Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi, asking if he approved of the "hooliganism" by Congress workers. "Can I have my Freedom of Expression". A legal notice was sent to him by a woman who claims to be Sanjay Gandhi's daughter, however, Bhandarkar said a formal reply has been sent to her. "We are frightened to promote our work".

"If the producers had nothing to hide about the movie, they should have first shown it to the Congress leaders and the members of the Gandhi family".

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has had several run-ins with the censor board previously over his films.

While the film has faced 16 cuts from the Censor Board, the director has attracted the wrath of the Congress workers over some portions of the film that they find objectionable.

In this regard, Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam wrote to CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani, expressing the grand old party's wish to watch the movie before it is "censored".:The trailer of the film says it's a film on Emergency and hence, we can see the likes of our beloved leaders like Indira Gandhi ji, Sanjay Gandhi ji and other senior leaders of the India National Congress. "I appeal to the film industry and people believing in the freedom of expression to support the film", he said. "We have cancelled promotions in Bangalore and Ahmedabad due to fear of agitation", he said.

The filmmaker said due to the controversy, the real story of "Indu Sarkar" was getting lost.
