Venkaiah Naidu emerges as NDA's front-runner for Vice President

The 18 opposition parties together named former West Bengal governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi as their candidate.

According to informed party sources, Naidu's name has nearly been finalised as candidate for the Vice President's post. "But battle must be fought and fought hard", the Congress President was quoted as saying by ANI. He will also be accompanied by top opposition leaders, including those from the Left parties and TMC.

And above all, his political career will come to an end once and for all, as he can not accept any other political post after completion of his term, except for being considered for the President post.

We must ensure, therefore, that the best minds and the best servants of India stand at the helm and to steer our society through the crisis that has beset our country today, Congress chief said. "We must have confidence in the values we believe in", she added.

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu is speculated to be BJP's candidate for vice presidential poll.

"In this meeting, we held discussions on Presidential elections and the upcoming monsoon session, however, no discussion on Vice President took place", Kumar said.

This election, she continued, "represents a clash of ideas, a conflict of disparate values".

Gopalkrishna Gandhi will also start his campaign soon after filing his nomination for the vice presidential election to be held on August 5.

Meira Kumar had said that this time the election is not a fight between two candidates, but a fight of ideologies and she appealed to the members of the Electoral College to "listen to their conscience" and vote for her.

The electorate, comprising elected Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members and members of state assemblies, is tilted in favour of the NDA, but the opposition is still working to seek support of some regional parties in favour of their candidate.
