Essential Phone launch date to be revealed next week

And while the best possible news we could give is that the phone is coming out in the next week, that's not the news we have for you. All three images highlight the titanium frame and ceramic body in various machining stages.

Essential founder Andy Rubin at the Wired Business Conference this year.

After two months of delays, the Essential Phone still doesn't have a final release date pinned down. Now, the company announced it secured investment funding from a few investment giants, including Amazon and Tencent Holdings.

Essential is Rubin's first big product company since he left Google in 2014. But weeks before the phone goes on sale, Essential has had a huge boost that might just make this whole thing viable.

A few weeks ago, Essential said that the Essential Phone would be released in a few weeks.

He wants to do away with dongles and connectors for his startup's devices and find new ways to get different ecosystems - like iOS, Android and Alexa - to all work with his company's operating system, Ambient OS, so all your electronics can work together.

With everything accounted for, The Wall Street Journal reports that Essential has managed to raise $330 million as it prepares to bring its first phone to market. It looks likely to face a similar design on the forthcoming iPhone 8, however, based on leaks, and other Android device makers are taking the cue and revealing screen-heavy prototypes with minimal bezels, so it'll be interesting to see how Essential positions itself with its go-to-market strategy once the phone is actually available. Rubin's own Playground venture capital firm and another, Redpoint, chipped into that pot. We already know that Sprint is the exclusive carrier for the handset in the United States.
