New regulations would allow for more medical marijuana products

Now the drug is only available in liquid and oil forms, or a capsule taken orally.

Additional medicines in the form of lotions, ointments, patches, tablets, and lozenges will be allowed.

The NYS Department of Health says the policy changes should make access to medical marijuana easier.

Other proposed changes include allowing more advertising by medical marijuana producers and streamlining manufacturing requirements, as well as modifications to security and laboratory requirements. They will also allow people who are not certified for medical marijuana use to enter a dispensary, which was previously prohibited, to learn more about the products that are offered and the state's medical marijuana program. The department is working with course providers to create a two-hour certification course that can be taken as an alternative to the DOH's current four-hour course.

The New York State Department of Health is conducting its own investigation into the matter, but would not release information until the probe is complete. The five companies already operating were opposed to letting new players in, however, saying the market isn't big enough to divvy up further. They will then be subject to a 30-day public comment period before they can be adopted.

"These regulations will continue to improve the program in several ways, including making new forms of medical marijuana available and improving the dispensing facility experience", state Health Commissioner Howard Zucker said in a statement.
