Vote No. 44 from JD(U), Cong moves closer to Sharad camp

In a related development, BJP president Amit Shah said in a tweet that he had invited Mr. Kumar to join the ruling National Democratic Alliance.

Sharad Yadav said action has been taken against a few leaders of the party "who are standing with me", and leaders close to Nitish Kumar have been threatening other JD (U) leaders supporting him.

It is unclear whom the lone JD (U) MLA in Gujarat, Chhotubhai Vasava, voted for in Tuesday's election in Gujarat for three Rajya Sabha seats. Karamsi Patel was one of the 44 Congress MLAs the party had flown out and put up at a resort in Bengaluru, followed by one in Anand, Gujarat, a day before polling to avoid "poaching" by BJP.

Senior Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav today congratulated Congress leader Ahmed Patel on winning the Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat, something that had turned into a prestige battle between the top leadership of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party. "Our support is with Ahmed Patel". Vaghela, whose resignation from the Congress on July 21 triggered the crisis for the party, voted for BJP even though he had told Ahmed Patel even a day before polling that his vote was "reserved" for Patel, according to a source in the party.

The victory came as a major boost for the Congress party.

"The decision to join hands with the BJP and form a government in Bihar was against the mandate given in the 2015 assembly polls". Next came the resignation of six Congress MLAs, three of whom, including Balwantsinh Rajput, joined the BJP nearly immediately. It is considering to move the Supreme Court to challenge the Election Commission's decision to disqualify the two votes. Six other Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Vaghela also cross-voted. Celebrations for Ahmed Patel's victory can wait.
