Anthony Scaramucci: Trump Needed to Be 'Much Harsher' to White Supremacy

"You've also this sort of Bannon-bart influence in there, which I think is a snag on the president", Scaramucci told Stephanopoulos.

"I wouldn't have given that statement", Scaramucci told Stephanopoulos.

Scaramucci insisted he was unaware the interview was being recorded and hit out at The New Yorker journalist Ryan Lizza after the interview was published, taking to Twitter to describe Lizza as the "Linda Tripp of 2017" and insisting "He absolutely taped the call without my permission", adding #lowlife.

Former White House media chief Anthony Scaramucci. "I think he needed to be much harsher as it related to the white supremacists and the nature of that". "You have to call that stuff out".

Scaramucci wasn't the only figure in Trump's orbit attempting to put distance between the president and the highly controversial adviser.

"I think there are elements inside of Washington, also inclusive in the White House, that are not necessarily abetting the president's interests or his agenda", he said while suggesting that Bannon may be one of the "leakers undermining [the president's] agenda".

Amid growing bipartisan criticism of his initial response, White House advisers appearing Sunday on talk shows strove to defend the president.

He said the "toleration of [white supremacy] by Steve Bannon is inexcusable".

Trump's daughter, Ivanka Trump, issued a tweet early Sunday that included the sort of language some people said her father should have used on Saturday.

"The whole thing is nonsensical".

"I wouldn't have recommended that statement", Scaramucci said of Trump's comments on Saturday, which were widely criticized for not singling out white supremacists to the point where the White House amended them later Sunday morning. It's not serving the president's interests.

When discussing the influences that he thinks are impacting Trump, Scaramucci urged the president to take a more mainstream approach in order to sell his agenda.

However, he said the president needed to bring in "more loyalists" in order to carry out his agenda.
