Army man killed in Awneera gunfight

An exchange of fire was continuing on Saturday between security forces and militants holed up in a village in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district, police said.

Earlier in the day, two Indian Army soldiers were killed in the fierce gunbattle.

Meanwhile, different reports suggest presence of 10 to 13 militants even though the number could not be officially confirmed.

Sunil Randhawa of the 17 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry (JAKLI) was injured in the incident and was taken an army hospital in Drugmulla.

Two Army men were also martyred in the encounter in Avneera village that began last evening, and three personnel including the captain were injured.

They said that the operation was still going on.

Reports from the village said stone-pelting protesters clashed with the security forces in the village to break the cordon around the village.

After injuring two policemen and an army trooper in Hajin area of distirct Bandipora, militants have managed to escape from the area.

"As security personnel tried to zero in on the houses damaged in the gunfight, militants opened fire again", said a policeman.
