First Neymar, now Kylian Mbappe - PSG line up £160m deal

I refer to the transfer of the 25-year-old Brazilian known only as Neymar from Barcelona to Paris St Germain for a world-record fee close to £200 million.

Former Barcelona captain Xavi insists it was a surprise that Neymar decided to make the move to the French capital and said it evoked memories of Figo's shock move to rivals Real Madrid in 2000.

New Paris Saint-Germain signing Neymar will not report former club Barcelona to Federation Internationale de Football Association over a frozen payment of €26 million.

Although the main goal for the capital club is to finally challenge for the Champions League crown, their first task this term will be to retake the Ligue 1 title from Monaco.

Anything other than a spectacular debut showing from Neymar and the criticism will begin in earnest.

Can Barcelona truly replace Neymar?

Neymar's contract with Paris-Saint Germain runs through June 30, 2022, and it remains to be seen if he is used in Sunday's match at Guingamp by manager Unai Emery.

"He's a player who will help the club to get a level higher", Emery said on Sunday. In all competitions the Chile global scored 30 goals and set up a further 15 for the Gunners, leading to speculation that Manchester City, PSG and Bayern Munich were interested. "They have removed a player who could sometimes be inconsistent".

"We'll see what he can give to PSG".

Barcelona also apparently tried to scoop up French star Ousmane Dembele, 20, who plays for the German side Dortmund, but the Bundesliga squad rejected the club's initial offer of roughly $118 million.

After the turbulent nature of his move from Barcelona, which saw Neymar buy himself out of his own contract before moving to France, the new recruit will be afforded time to settle in.
