Mandi landslide: Death toll rises to five

At least 10 people have been killed and 6 others injured due to landslides in the Padhar area of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh.

The incident happened near Mandi-Pathankot highway on Saturday night.

The army along with the local authorities and the National Disaster Response Force are carrying out a search and rescue operation.

At least five people were killed last month in a mudslide in remote Arunachal Pradesh state along the border with China. Six passengers have survived, whereas 2 bodies have been recovered from the debris.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi prayed for the quick recovery of those injured. "My condolences with the families of the deceased".

The landslide swept away the road and the buses for nearly 800 metres down into a gorge and there was no trace of one of the buses which was completely buried under the debris so far. As per a Times of India report, one of the bus was on its way to Katra in Jammu from Manali, while the other was on its way to Chamba from Manali.

Deputy Commissioner of Mandi, Sandeep Kadam had confirmed the death of two people and stated "three vehicles were stranded after the landslide".

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh tweeted he is on his way to the accident site, adding the NDRF has been called in. "The relief announcement will be done by the Government as per the schedule", Singh told ANI.
