New Fidget Spinner Safety Guidelines Prove We Can't Have Nice Things

There was one notable choking incident in May that resulted in a 10-year-old having to get surgery to remove part of a spinner.

On Thursday, Ann Marie Buerkle, acting chairwoman of the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission, released a statement addressing reports of "fires involving battery-operated fidget spinners" and providing guidelines for usage.

The CPSC also warns that there are all sorts of regulations fidget spinner manufacturers must adhere to in order to legally sell their product in the market.

If the fidget spinner did not come with one, make sure to use a cable with the correct connections for charging.

When it comes to fidget spinners and choking, the CPSC notes that the plastic and metal spinners have small pieces that can break, creating a choking hazard.

For consumers, the CPSC recommends that fidget spinner users avoid playing with them around their faces or putting them in their mouths. Also, they should use the original charging cable which came with the product.

For consumers, the CPSC has set up an online "Fidget Spinners Information Center", with warnings about choking hazards and potential fire risks from battery-powered spinners.

The agency recommends that parents keep fidget spinners away from children under the age of 3.

Have working smoke alarms in your house to protect you if there is a fire. Fidget spinners provide a salutary lesson for start-ups considering the next "big invention".

But most fidget spinners are considered general-use products, the commission's business guidance said, so they aren't intended primarily for children - and they don't have to meet those standards.

This June a fidget spinner that was equipped with Bluetooth in order to be able to play music, caught fire after it was left to charge for a period of 45 minutes.

Never charge a product with batteries overnight while you are sleeping.
