Roger Federer wins Montreal Masters semi-final against Robin Haase

But if wins over Mannarino, Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro have been any indication, Shapovalov-who is the youngest player ever to reach a Masters 1000 semifinal-could be on a collision course for a championship clash with Federer. It set up a wild final game, with Shapovalov saving two match points and Zverev erasing three break points before it ended with a misfired backhand by the Canadian. Stretching back to 2006 and 2007, when Federer wore monogrammed blazers onto the court, followed by the gold piping cardigan of years to come, he has become one with the image of Centre Court and its dark green stands. In head to head stats, Federer leads Haase by 1-0 but their only meeting took place back in 2012 during a David Cup rubber between Switzerland and Netherlands.

Flag-waving fans in the packed grandstands at Uniprix Stadium were hoping for more magic, but the German was too strong, winning 81 per cent of the points off his serve compared to 64 per cent for Shapovalov.

It was not enough for the underdog, though, and Haase was beaten when a loose forehand drifted wide on Federer's first match point.

Fourth-seeded Zverev, coming off a win last week in Washington, D.C., and seeking a fifth tournament win this year, will face Swiss legend Roger Federer in the final on Sunday. "A bit surprising, to be quite honest, because I hadn't practiced much".

However, as great champions usually do, the Swiss improved as the match went on and found a way to win.

Shapovalov's biggest win of his young career against the 15-time Grand Slam victor came as a result of some inspired tennis in front of a boisterous home crowd who cheered his every shot.

It seems to be Roger Federer's title for the taking this weekend in Montreal at the Rogers Cup.

"Worst loss of the year because I lost against a player with a lower ranking", Nadal said.

Federer has taken more time off this year than usual.

"I have reached levels that I never thought I would be able to reach, winning so many titles", Federer told the ATP's website.

Both the Rogers Cup and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati are tune-up events for the final Grand Slam tournament on the tennis calendar, the US Open, which gets under way on August 28.

Polansky earned a stay of execution after holding serve in the sixth game to make it 5-1, but Federer raced into the next round with a comfortable hold, finishing with an emphatic overhead smash. Number one for me was anyway something for later in the year. His quarterfinal opponent was Diego Schwartzman, who had upset 3rd seed Dominic Thiem earlier in the week.

"I played a lot of good matches, especially yesterday against (seventh-seeded Grigor) Dimitrov", Haase said. Federer has won 15 straight matches on hard court.
