Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels

Paxton is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks.

"Obviously it's disheartening news, no doubt", Seattle manager Scott Servais said. No doubt. It's been a insane season with all the injuries. To put ourselves in the position we are now, a lot of it has to do with James Paxton. "There's no doubt. He's been really, really good".

The Mariners' 6-3 loss Saturday to the Angels was disappointing for what it could have been - a capper to Martinez's wonderful jersey-retirement ceremony in front of a sellout crowd - and for what it was: The Mariners led 3-1 at the start of the seventh inning. The Canadian southpaw was especially dominant last month, going 6-0 record and 1.37 ERA, earning himself AL Pitcher of the Month honors for July in the process.

This was another winnable game that the Mariners just couldn't find a way to win.

It's Paxton's second stint on the DL this season after missing 24 games in May with a forearm strain.

He joins a Seattle team battling several others in the American League looking for a wild-card spot. A day later, Trout walked with one out, taking a close 3-2 pitch from James Pazos (3-4).

Add Paxton's pectoral strain to Felix Hernandez's shoulder bursitis, Hisashi Iwakuma's shoulder inflammation and Drew Smyly's Tommy John surgery, and it's hard to picture a playoff scenario where the Mariners take the rest of the American League by storm - or at all. He began the season with AA Arkansas where he went 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA in six games before being promoted to Tacoma May 8. The Mariners selected Moore in the second round (72 overall) of the 2015 draft out of Oregon State University.

Okay, I know Miranda has a flawless record against the Halos in his career, but thoroughly outplaying Seattle in the first three games of this series and has to be full of confidence after passing the M's and occupying the second wild card spot at the time of this post. Seattle is 4-0 in Miranda's last 4 starts against the Angels.
