Trump is going after 2 Republican senators

So Trump lashed out at him on Twitter, accusing him of a "disgusting lie" and insisting Graham "just can't forget his election trouncing".

Mr. Flake recently penned a book "Conscience of a Conservative: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return to Principle" that warned Mr. Trump's brand of populism threatened to destroy the conservative movement and the Republican Party.

"Great to see that Dr. Kelli Ward is running against Flake Jeff Flake, who is WEAK on borders, crime and a non-factor in Senate", Trump tweeted early Thursday morning. Should they turn against Trump, however, there is the chance that they will pay for that decision in primary elections.

Sen. John McCain defended his GOP colleague and fellow Arizonan, calling Flake "a principled legislator & always does what's right for the people of #AZ". Despite the fact that Graham is staunch legislative ally of Trump, the president can not stand verbal criticism. The senator opposed Mr. Trump's candidacy and has emerged as a leading GOP critic on Capitol Hill.

Trump said in his tweet: "Publicity seeking Lindsey Graham falsely stated that I said there is moral equivalency between the KKK, neo-Nazis & white supremacists and people like Ms. Heyer". Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of SC are only going to further deepen the divide between himself and a Republican Party increasingly horrified by his conduct.

Graham on Wednesday criticized the president for saying that white supremacists and counterprotesters were equally at fault for the violence that took place in Charlottesville, which killed 32-year-old Heyer and injured dozens more. House Speaker Paul Ryan charged that, "White supremacy is repulsive".

The nuanced statements reflect the party establishment's delicate dance.
