Fortnite's battle royale mode to be standalone and F2P

Fortnite's battle royale mode to be standalone and F2P

It didn't take long for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' phenomenal popularity to spawn contenders vying for the Battle Royale crown, with Epic's long-in-development survival shooter Fortnite recently rolling out its aptly-titled Battle Royale mode.

Epic Games has clearly seen the massive success of PUBG and is putting its own spin on the formula with a Battle Royale mode in the scavenge and survive build-em-up, Fortnite. Likewise, Fortnite Battle Royale has a similar premise with 100 players dropping in on a single map in a massive PvP mode.

The mode is now in public test, and will launch next Tuesday (September 26), handily beating PUBG to market on consoles.

Epic Games has also noted that the game mode will be free and will not sell any item "that gives a competitive advantage" but, "at some point in the future we will sell other things including cosmetics or compendium-like content". Squads will launch that same day. To be fair, the new mode looks pretty fun, and I'll definitely be giving it a go next week.

Battle Royale for Fortnite will be available as a free download later this month, beating out PUBG's planned Xbox One release which is scheduled for sometime in 2017.
