Scientists claim extinct 'Pac-man' frog was dinosaur killer

It is reported that the "devil frog" lived 68 million years ago on the island of Madagascar. Beelzebufo Ampinga was the largest frog ever lived.

The chilling revelation came from a study that analyzed the biting power of South American horned frogs, which are the closest living descendants of Beelzebufo. "Horned frogs ambushed animals as large as themselves including frogs, snakes and rodents". Most interesting thing is that Brazil's largest Ceratophrys frog with its 10 cm width head can produce 500 N powerful biting force.

Published Thursday in the Nature journal Scientific Reports, the research by scientists from the University of Adelaide, California State Polytechnic University-Pomona, University of California-Riverside, and University College London (UCL), "found that small horned frogs, with head width of about 4.5 cm (1.8 inches), can bite with a force of 30 newtons (N) or about 3 kilograms or 6.6 pounds." according to a press release.

"This would feel like having 50 litres of water balanced on your fingertip", says Professor Kristopher Lappin, Professor of Biological Sciences at California State Polytechnic University - Pomona.

The frogs of today do not exactly inspire horror stories, but a certain species of horned frogs in South America, the Ceratophrys cranwelli, are very aggressive and can eat animals that are the same size as they are. One won't want to experience that biting force, said Lappin. The results were compared to the head measurements of Madagascar's Beelzebufo ampinga to determine comparative bite force.

Scientists have discovered that a prehistoric species of giant frog had a bite so powerful it could gobble down small dinosaurs with its massive mouth.

Researcher Marc Jones of the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Museum said, "Vast majority of frogs which have weak jaws and consume small prey". This biting force is similar to some of the predators now living on the Earth like wolves and tigers. This frog is small but has a powerful jaw capable of bites with about 6.6lbs of force.

Some other name that the Beelzebufo have the devil frog, devil toad, and frog from hell. In size the specimens of Beelzebufo ampinga, could reach 41 centimetre with a weight of 4.5 kilograms. These frogs have comically large mouths sit quietly, wait and snap at anything that passes them. The study says that the skull size of the Beelzebufo Ampinga was 150 mm wide.
