Tim Cook on iPhone X: $999 is a 'value price'

Tim Cook on iPhone X: $999 is a 'value price'

Apple users prompted to upgrade their iPhone operating system Tuesday may not think much of the incremental improvements of iOS 11.

The iPhone X is jam-packed with exciting new features.

Rather than wiping out fingerprint sensors, though, the inclusion of facial recognition on the iPhone may lead to future phones with a greater breadth of biometric sensors. "We want to protect your data, because we know it's yours, not ours". Its tests showed the iPhone 8-Plus outperforming the 7-Plus by 67% when running the 3DMark IS graphics benchmark, by 28% when running the popular Geekbench 3 CPU benchmark in single-core mode and by 84% when running Geekbench 3 in multi-core mode. They also both have a metal frame and are IP67 certified dust and water resistant (so they can be submerged one metre deep for up to 30 minutes) but that's largely where the similarities end. The bottom and top bezels are still there, unlike the X, where they disappeared completely.

Their dimensions and weights are very different too. However, people might not like such a heavy and even fragile phone.

While the iPhone 8 isn't due to arrive to customers until Friday, new images shared by leaker Benjamin Geskin offers us an early glimpse of the device before the official public launch later this week.

While rumours are swirling around how impressive the iPhone X is, there are also many who counter that iPhone X, no matter how smart the design may be, is just another smartphone with some new features. But for the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, the availability window is only 1-2 weeks.

Engadget observes that the A11's extra horsepower relative to the A10 Fusion SoC inside the iPhone 7 and 7-Plus makes a real difference when running more demanding apps and games - including ones using Apple's new ARKit augmented reality platform.

I am not saying that iPhone X is not good. That's likely to be especially handy when multitasking. Portrait mode's software separates the subject from their surroundings and creates a blurred effect in the background. An IR camera snaps an image of these dots, which the phone uses to authenticate you against an already-stored image of your face. If you add these costs, Apple's profit margins on the iPhone X aren't going to be that high.

The iPhone X supports wireless charging based on Qi standard, and fast-charging technology. If you buy the 256GB model, the $1,149 is also "a value price". Held on September 12, the Cupertino, California, company showed off its next slate of phones with the iPhone 8 (with Plus version available) and the X, their new "ultra" phone set to rival Android's already present set of OLED powerhouses. Contracts meanwhile start at around £42 per month with £99 upfront. The phone will be available for pre-order on October 27 and go on sale a week later on November 3rd. Only the iPhone X comes with the controversial Face ID.

Would you not survive if you don't own an iPhone or Samsung?
