Airtel, Karbonn launch 4G smartphone at Rs 1399: Here are the details

With an aim to counter JioPhone, India's largest telecom operator Bharti Airtel has finally announced its partnership with handset maker Karbonn Mobiles to offer a 4G smartphone at an effective price of just Rs 1399.

The buyer will have to make a down payment of 2,899 rupees for the smartphone, from which 500 rupees would be refunded after 18 months and the remaining 1,000 rupees after three years.

Alternately, customers can also do a recharge of ₹169 per month continuously for 36 months to get a total cashback of ₹1500 after 36 months.

If you do not wish to opt for the Rs 169 bundled plan, you can get recharges of any value.

But the cash refund benefit is contingent on consumer going in for recharges worth Rs 3,000 within the first 18 months (to claim the first refund instalment of Rs 500) and additional Rs 3,000 over the next 18 months (for second refund instalment of Rs 1000), it added. The device offers a single SIM card slot with 4G LTE and VoLte capability.

At 2.55pm, shares of Bharti Airtel were up 4.23% at Rs400.30 on BSE, while the Sensex was down 0.29% to 31,832.67 points.

You'll thus get Rs 1500 back and render the effective price of the A40 Indian to be Rs 1399. All smartphones under this initiative will be available at leading mobile retail stores across the country. The new Rs 169 plan offers unlimited local and STD voice calling along with 512MB of 4G data per day.

Airtel will be competing with Reliance Jio and BSNL in the 4G phone space.

In places like the United States, a subscriber is prevented from "running away" or "jailbreaking" the subsidized phone as doing so will impact his or her credit rating, which is required to take any kind of loans in the future.

After buying the Karbonn A40 Indian, you have to use an Airtel SIM and recharge it with the Airtel Rs. 169 plan to avail the offer.

Other stipulated features of the 4.0-inch Karbonn A40 Indian include 1.3GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, 1,400mAh battery, a 2MP rear camera and a 0.3MP VGA snapper on the front. "This is yet another step in our ongoing journey to deeply understand customers and bring innovation that delights them".

The feature phone will have 4G network connectivity options.

It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and supports 22 Indian regional languages. The device also features a MicroSD card slot which can handle cards of up to 32GB.

"As the market leader and pioneer of 4G services in India, Airtel's aspiration is to digitally empower every Indian with high speed data access". We plan to partner with multiple manufacturers to bring affordable smartphone options to the market and build an "open ecosystem" of low cost devices. We are delighted to partner with Karbonn to remove barriers to smartphone adoption and enable millions of Indians to leapfrog to a full touchscreen smartphone experience.
