Kevin Hogan becomes latest name on Browns quarterback jersey

BEREA, Ohio - Kevin Hogan will be the new starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns when they play the Houston Texans on Sunday, coach Hue Jackson announced Wednesday. Kizer's future in Cleveland could also be in question if the Browns land the top overall pick in next year's draft.

Hogan takes over for rookie Deshone Kizer, who was benched during the Browns' 17-14 loss to the New York Jets in Week 5. He gets the ball out quickly and accurately, neither of which Kizer could do.

"This does not change the way we feel about DeShone going forward", Jackson said in a statement. "He has worked extremely hard and still very much has a bright future".

The 21-year-old Kizer, a second-round pick out of Notre Dame, went 0-5 as a starter and was last in the National Football League with a 49.5 passer rating, completing 81 of 159 passes for 851 yards with three touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas did not express a preference when asked on October 9 about the quarterback situation, but he did say he hopes Jackson sticks with whatever choice is made.

Kizer, the 52nd pick of the 2017 draft, can still be a franchise quarterback, Jackson said on October 9. The winless rookie is completing less than 51 percent of his passes and has thrown nine interceptions to his three touchdowns. His passer rating is 49.5. Hogan completed 16-of-19 passes for two touchdowns and an interception after taking over.
