Bandipora encounter: Gunbattle between security forces and terrorists is underway in Hajin, Handipora of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday, ANI reported.

Official sources said the training of the elite Garud personnel with the Army was part of a range of measures the Indian Air Force (IAF) had initiated to bolster security at all its installations after the terror attack on the Pathankot Air Force base a year ago.

Defence spokesman said that Army today paid befitting tributes to two of its Indian Air Force comrades who attained martyrdom during Counter Terrorist operations in Bandipora on 11 Oct 2017.

Two Lashkar-e-Toiba terrorists were eliminated in Hajin area of Bandipora district as a result of a cordon and search operation.

The police sources said, "Three soldiers sustained injuries, two of whom were critical and later succumbed".

In the encounter, two terrorists were also gunned down by the Indian security personnel. They were with the army for operational experience and training.

Director General of Police (DGP) S P Vaid said the two Lashkar members were involved in several terror attacks in which security forces personnel and civilians had been killed.

Hailing the soldiers, Vaid said in an ensuing tweet, "Salute to officers &a Jawans of SF & J&K Police".

The need for a dedicated force was felt when militants attacked two air bases in Jammu and Kashmir in 2001.

"He was killed in a joint operation by the Jammu and Kashmir Police's Special Operation Group, local police, the CRPF and the Army", he had said.

Nasrullah Mir, a local resident, was killed along with his associate in a brief gunfight with forces on Wednesday morning in Rakh-i-Paribal area of the town.

The Garud commandos were seriously injured in the firing with the terrorists.

According to reports, the operation is still on.
