The US Is Withdrawing from UNESCO Over 'Anti-Israel Bias'

The United States has made a decision to withdraw from the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), AFP is reporting on Thursday.

The U.S. was strongly against it and withdrew funding, but the State Department remained in the world body.

On October 12, 2017, the Department of State notified UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova of the USA decision to withdraw from the organization and to seek to establish a permanent observer mission to UNESCO.

"This decision was not taken lightly, and reflects U.S. concerns with mounting arrears at UNESCO, the need for fundamental reform in the organisation, and continuing anti- Israel bias at UNESCO", State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert said.

UNESCO's Director General Irina Bokova said that she deeply regret the decision of the United States of America to withdraw from the organisation.

UNESCO, the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization known for its designation of world heritage sites, is a global development agency with missions that include promoting sex education, literacy, clean water and equality for women.

A plan to withdraw from the global body was reportedly made several weeks ago, with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson informing French President Emmanuel Macron of America's imminent departure.
