NOPD Officer shot, killed

A suspect shot and killed an NOPD officer in East New Orleans around midnight Friday.

NOLA.com reported that the suspect was shot by officers when they returned fire. No other officers were wounded.

NOPD Chief Michael Harrison says the officer killed was on routine patrol at the time of the shooting. "I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts", he said.

The slain officer's name wasn't immediately released to allow his relatives the opportunity to notify extended family about his killing. The NOPD, Louisiana State Police and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating the scene. The officer was able to shoot the suspect, who retreated into a nearby apartment and was eventually captured by a S.W.A.T. Team.

When the victim got out of his vehicle, the perpetrator fired on him and the officer returned fire, according to FOX 8.

He and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu met with the officer's family.

The department has made grief counselors and chaplains available to officers mourning their coworker's death, Harrison said.
