Rafael Nadal beats Grigor Dimitrov to reach semi-finals of Shanghai Masters

Nadal took three points in succession to begin the showdown as his opponent's fate looked to be sealed, but Dimitrov shifted momentum by clinching seven of the next eight to level at one set each.

Rafael Nadal fought past Grigor Dimitrov in a classy quarter-final at the Shanghai Masters on Friday.

Top seed Nadal, 31, grabbed the crucial break of serve in the ninth game of the first set and there was nothing between them as they entered a tense second-set tie break.

The one positive for Cilic, however, is that sole victory happened to be a 6-1, 6-3 trouncing in Beijing, their only previous meeting in Chinese territory, holding some hope for the Croat in Shanghai come Saturday's semi.

Dimitrov extended the quarterfinal to a third set when he rebounded from a 4-2 deficit to win the second-set tiebreaker.

World number 5 Marin Cilic won his 39th match of the season, beating Albert Ramos-Vinolas by 6-3 6-4 in an hour and 21 minutes for his 7th semi-final of the season.

"Winning a lot of matches in a row, so I'm very happy for everything", Nadal said.

Nadal will now lock horns with sixth seed Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the semi-finals of the men's singles event. "We'll see tomorrow if I can have another good day".

Cilic was broken for the first time in his 29th service game of the week at 3-3 in the second set by Ramos-Vinolas.

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer breezed into the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters on Thursday and Juan Martin del Potro defeated racquet-smashing Alexander Zverev.

"I was a little bit angry with myself just with not keeping up the good tennis at that moment", Cilic said.
