Trump nominates Kirstjen Nielsen for DHS secretary

President Trump pronounced that he deliberated to name Kirstjen Nielsen, a premiere White House aide to usher the Department of Homeland Security promoting a previous homeland security official in George W. Bush administration who has recently functioned to thrust succession in Mr. Trump's disorderly West Wing.

Nielsen who worked under Kelly at DHS before coming to the White House - only to go back to DHS in Kelly's old role - has earned a reputation of being tough to work with, as Kelly worked to narrow the flow of information and people into the Oval Office.

"I know you will fulfill your duties with dedication, determination and resolve".

"There will be no on-the-job training for Kirstjen".

Neilsen is an expert in homeland and national security policy.

In accepting the nomination, Nielsen said she hopes to "live up to the standards the American people expect and deserve".

If confirmed by the Senate, Nielsen would fill the post once held by John Kelly.

Johnson said he would work closely with the administration and the panel's ranking member, Sen.

That has included limiting access to the president to some who had formerly enjoyed near-unimpeded access.

Trump praised Kelly as well as acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke during Thursday's announcement, thanking her for her response to the wildfires in California and the devastating series of hurricanes. 'She was a little disappointed to hear this news, ' Trump said to laughs.

While at the Bush White House she was in charge of emergency preparedness, and came in for criticism in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Neither the White House nor Nielsen responded to requests for comment.

Trump urged the Senate to look at Nielsen's qualifications, calling for a quick confirmation.

Trump, joined by Nielsen in the East Room of the White House, said it was "hard to imagine a more qualified candidate for this critical position".

Trump in his speech heavily cited Ms. Nielsen's extensive professional experience.
